Public Speaking

Public speaking using the English language is the most uncomfortable task that one could be assigned with especially if it’s not his/her native language. Once you start uttering the first word, the scrutiny starts. One should be careful in every word that would come out of one’s mouth because that could lead to a serious trouble. Refer to the examples below of some grammatical lapses made by some individuals while delivering their public speeches:

“I remember meeting the mother of a child who was abducted by the terrorists right here in the Oval Office.”
“Our enemies...never stop thinking of ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”

Applying the first example in a real-life scenario, a person could confuse his listener as the information provided has no clear thought. If we are to analyze it, the sentence tells us that the child was abducted in the Oval office rather than telling us that the meeting place was in the Oval office. The importance of knowing correct positioning of modifiers could help us provide a clearer picture of what we are trying to say. If this conversation was between a detective and a witness—this could be very misleading and this could not help resolve a case. If a public figure will utter the words from the second example, then he will need to clarify the context of his statement since it doesn’t sound right.
For non-native English speakers, learning to use the English Language correctly is a struggle since there are a lot of things to learn and consider. One mistake in the choice of words could create a great conflict due to misunderstandings. Thus, one should strive harder to learn the English language. The Rules on Grammar should always be observed when using the English language to communicate with other people. By simply following the grammar rules in English language, one can become a more competent English Language speaker. Watching English movies can also help to get an idea on how to pronounce the words in English Language correctly and how are words formed to become a sentence.

All the resources needed to learn the English language are made available everywhere-from billboards, flyers, books and even on the internet. It only takes perseverance and hard work to help someone to become a learning non-native English speaker to a more competent English Language speaker.
